GRA Opportunity: Thermo-mechanical simulation of solid rocket propellant

The solids group is seeking to fill a graduate research assistantship (GRA) to start in early 2024. The project involves the simulation of solid rocket propellant to determine thermomechanical response during burn as a function of loading and composition. The roles of the GRA will include theoretical development, code writing and testing, data analysis.

This opportunity is available to US citizens only.

Desired qualifications include: mastery of graduate-level topics in mathematics (PDEs, calculus of variations, optimization theory); familiarity with Linux; proficiency in C++; basic knowledge of solid composite propellants; status as PhD student or MS student with intent to seek PhD.

Funding is anticipated to be available for at least one year; support for any duration is dependent on availability and sustained progress by the GRA.

Interested students should contact Brandon Runnels directly (brunnels@iastate.edu) and mention this posting.
